"Alopecia" is a word that tends to sound scarier than it needs to. In practice, it's just the medical term for hair loss, and there's more than one type, each with its own causes and behavior.
Understanding that range matters for a practical reason: there's no single treatment that works for every type of alopecia. Knowing, even in general terms, which category best matches what you're experiencing helps you ask the right questions when seeking a professional evaluation.

Androgenetic alopecia (the most common type)
Also known as male or female pattern baldness, this is by far the most common form of hair loss, affecting tens of millions of people in the United States alone. It has a genetic and hormonal basis, linked to the action of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on genetically sensitive follicles.
It's a progressive process: in men, it typically starts at the hairline and crown; in women, it usually shows up as a widening part, with the frontal hairline generally staying intact.
Here's an important point: there's currently no definitive cure for androgenetic alopecia, meaning the genetic predisposition behind it can't be permanently eliminated. That doesn't mean nothing can be done, though. Thanks to advances in trichology and dermatology, it's often possible to meaningfully slow the progression of hair loss and even improve the density of already-miniaturized hair, without necessarily turning to a hair transplant.
The research is consistent on one point: the earlier treatment starts, the better the odds of a favorable outcome, since it's easier to preserve follicles that are still active than to recover ones that have already fully miniaturized. Equally important, the benefits of any approach to androgenetic alopecia tend to depend on consistent, ongoing use: stopping treatment generally allows the underlying genetic process to resume its natural course.
Telogen effluvium (temporary shedding)
Unlike androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium is usually temporary. It happens when a significant physical or emotional event (such as high fever, surgery, childbirth, or intense stress) pushes a larger number of follicles into the resting phase at the same time.

Alopecia areata (an autoimmune condition)
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks hair follicles. It typically shows up as round, well-defined bald patches on the scalp, and in some cases can also affect other areas with hair, like eyebrows and eyelashes.
Because it's an autoimmune condition, rather than simply a hormonal process or a normal hair-cycle issue, alopecia areata generally requires dermatological evaluation and follow-up.
Traction alopecia (a mechanical cause)
This type has a very different cause from the others: it's brought on by repeated tension on the hair, usually linked to tight hairstyles like pulled-back ponytails, braids, or buns worn frequently.
When caught and corrected in time (typically by adjusting the hairstyle), traction alopecia tends to be reversible. If the tension continues for too long, though, the damage to the follicles can become permanent.
Other types, with specific causes
Beyond these four types, there are other forms of alopecia linked to specific causes, such as certain medications, cancer treatments (chemotherapy and radiation), particular medical conditions, and scalp infections, among others. Each of these situations has its own pattern of onset and outlook.
